Some hedge fund manager likes AWRE

forbes.com

On April 8, Aware jumped on the news that Nortel (nyse: NT) would sell DSL equipment to Bell Atlantic (nyse: BEL) for its DSL service. As you may have guessed, Nortel uses Aware technology, leading to another run-up in the stock.

Nortel uses AWRE's technology? Wonder how the writer decided this?

the score so far, 12/31/98 10K

adi: full rate adsl in '93, lite in 3/98
lu: licensed lite
siemens: lite in 8/98
coms: full rate adsl
stm: lite in 12/98

the vast bulk of awre revs today is contract research
and product revs, mostly eval kits and gear for would be
adsl makers. going forward, they will be relying on the
above companies to make the chips to integrate into systems
and peripherals. '98 royalty revs were about 418k or 3.6%
of total revs. for revs, the best is yet to come, but i'm
already wondering what is their next act. my theory is that
lite is only a transitional technology and that new flavors
of xdsl will appear. how long lite has the market is the
$64k question. awre's partnership with adi is strategic, adi
chips have been designed in more than anyone else. but adi
and others can go to ti, alcatel, pairgain, orckit for the next
generation in intellectual property, asic cores, and software.
someday, "aware" will become "beware"... <vbg>
(sorry, that was too tempting to pass up)

No, but they invented the "wavelet algorithm" enhancement to ADSL which is more then sliced bread....It's the "xDSL sandwich".
