US Robotics fans - I recall some discussion on this thread that 3com made a mistake in severing the connection between Total Control group and the Courier group which made the modems for PC's. Does anyone remember the source for this point? Was the point that there were benefits between Design and Manufacturing that were lost or was the point that the combination solved a chicken and egg problem in marketing? I.e. that people wouldn't buy modems without ISP's providing 56k service.

I am teaching a case on US Robotics and the synergy in manufacturing and design between these groups. It would be a nice follow-up to know whether these groups became more separated at 3com and is possibly part of the problem at 3com? Tom
