MOF to keep yen in check, Sakakibara says

------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Ministry of Finance (MOF) will keep the yen in check because
it would be undesirable for it to surge against the U.S. dollar, at
least before Japan's economy enters a recovery path, the vice finance
minister for international affairs said Friday.
''We have to make utmost efforts to help the economy recover
smoothly,'' Eisuke Sakakibara said in a speech at a symposium,
stressing the policy of keeping the yen in the current 120 yen range
to the dollar.
