>> I would want to own stock in a boxmaker from here on in.

I think you meant to type "I wouldn't want...", and I'm beginning to agree with you Bill. There's many safer sectors to play in. In fact, most of my dollar gains in the boxmaker arena this year have come from puts on hwp and cpq. It may be time for me to resign from the Dell Glee Club.

Cisco is finally heating up. Funny, they've seemed sleepy, but I've realized a 93% return on my purchase of 7/2/98 and 153% on the 10/5/98 buy. It reminds me of the Japanese Bullet Train - the ride is so smooth you don't notice how fast you're moving <g>.

I'd be interested in getting opinions on Extreme Networks from any NetTechs lurking on the thread. I started a small position at 51 yesterday, but I'm not exactly sure why - except that it was fun trying to find an entry point in an overheated ipo. I've been told that extr's hardware approach to layer 3 switching results in speeds 2 orders of magnitude faster than Cisco's software based approach; any truth to this rumor?

Lindy, OTOT Intel

Tony, I would want to own stock in a boxmaker from here on in.

I wouldn't. I think what you meant to say is wouldn't, no?

Re Intel, do you have the same opinion about them given that their ASPs are NOT going down because Xeons sell for as much as in the thousands of $$$ each? Next year Merced, McKinley at 64 bit = the hottest new product of the millennium (so far). You're making the same mistake that most of the analysts make, thinking that what Intel competes in with AMD is all they make.

Still, like I said in the post to Frank, sentiment is against Intel and the box makers right now. I agree except for with Intel. I know you're mind is made up, fine, each to his own.

'How quickly they forget'

Lindy, I have been saying this about Boxmakers for a while, the PC market is getting cannibalized by sharp drop in Average Selling Price of the Box.

If you are a fan of internet, and networking this is great as there will be exponential demand for the bandwidth and networking equipment by ISP and carriers.

DELL will not be immune to this phenomenon, irrespective of their business model. These BOX MAKERS made big profits when Memory chip makers and IC makers were getting killed last three years ex. Micron, Cirrus logic, LSI logic, and others. Its the turn of the commodity box makers to take it on the chin, while NETWORKERS and TELECOM equipment and service providers make the big bucks. This bodes well for us as average low income american can now buy a BOX and get on the net(CSCO,LU) and RIDE THE LIGHT(QWST). Money should flow out of DELL, CPQ, HWP into CSCO, LU, QWST, WCOM and so on.

Regards,

BR
