>>Does anybody want to guess how long it will take GIC to solve all the problems with IP telephony and HFC?<<

Ken, better yet, would anyone care to list what those problems are?

In general terms, the problems are both protocol-specific and administrative at the network level, and intensely logistic, at the residence. Not to mention the inertia of T's bureaucracy.

A time frame? I'd guess another one and a half to two years before they have a stabilized platform that they could start to deploy across the board. Perhaps a bunch of news items that speak to test sites and pilots, before then, just to keep the fire burning. But nothing that would resemble a large scale deployment until 2001-2002. There are more blockers at play here in the VoIP model than merely the ones which they will face in the local plant. If there is one thing that T can absolutely NOT afford to do, it would be to come out with a shoddy or otherwise inferior product. JMHO.

It also remains to be seen if their venture into VoIP will be limited to their local facilities (cable) or if they will take it at the same time out into their vaster wide area network. Frank

Good point...also, Does T need ATHM to provide VoIP ??? Again, ahhaha knows more about VoIP, but as I recall from posts long ago, I don't think so.
