i believe chuzzlewit has addressed this issue at length and has more expertise than i , when it comes to 10k's....the 10k was posted over the last week or so and the 10k shows the put sales...

Stock transactions like this don't affect the earnings statement, so this affects DELL's cash position but not their income. Lots of people came to the same conclusion as you, but the correct way to view it is take what you knew about DELL's business and add $3.1 billion in cash to the picture. The earnings were done the hard way, by selling product.
