Duncan, Hi!! RE: It is amazing how quickly DELL is taking over this business. I originally thought that the market was so large that Compaq would go its way and DELL would go its way. In fact, the DELL model is going BOTH ways-and fast! Take a look at this quote from Aaron Goldberg's report from Infobeads: First thanks for the links: It is so wonderful to find you openly discussing what is ACTUALLY occuring here...a few quotes immediately come to mind: "TAKE PAIN TO CAUSE PAIN" Conference Call Qt. 4 99...go figure.... :o) "IN 1991 ONLY ABOUT 30% OF THE MARKET WAS AVAILABLE TO US, AND WE HAD MAYBE 3% OF THAT MARKET,....BUT NOW WE ARE IN CHINA, JAPAN, ALL OVER EUROPE, AND WE HAVE INTEGERATED CAPABILITIES AND ALL THESE NEW PRODUCTS (HIGH END WORKSTATIONS, NOTEBOOK COMPUTERS, AND SERVERS). SO NOW 90% OF THE MARKET BECOMES AVAILABLE, AND WE HAVE ABOUT 9% OF THAT. OUR AVAILABLE MARKET HAS EXPANDED ENORMOUSLY" November 1998 .....if you can't figure this out....well, I even passed math!! "Dell said it will start selling storage systems to support its servers, starting with the PowerVault 650F. That system uses Fibre Channel, an I/O technology typically associated with high-end Unix systems. However, Dell says its offering PowerVault 650F systems starting at $15,000, which the company estimates is about 50% less than current market offering." Dell executives say the company's direct model and low capital expenses help it offer greater savings on enterprise-class products. "Dell is bringing the efficient, value priced model to the enterprise market," Mike Lambert senior VP of DELL's enterprise systems group......" I suspect IT managers will rapidly see they've been overcharged for these products in the past" IMO the word has been spread and the results are in the numbers CPQ is anticipating....Seeing the size of that server facility last summer was something..... I'm sure someone that held CPQ and saw what he did....would have seen the anticipation of DELL's future in this area........I believe the proof will be in this quarter for DELL and future qts. Dell is after that high end...Their model is unstoppable in being #1 selling "MOUSEPADS" or PC's.... Best, Kemble
