I have a Fidelity Account and it has been smooth sailing operationally. Actually you can access Fidelity two ways:

The web site, or,
Fox+ Pro, their proprietary program. In this case you have a client program on your system which dials in to Fidelity over the internet and monitors all transactions for you. It also gets into fairly extensive record keeping, ... prints Sched D, etc.... I have been using it and it is very easy.

I also have an Accutrade account. You can access them over the net or use thier proprietary program which I do. This program dials in over a private wire. I have never had an access problem. This package allows you to write a script and have your machine execute transactions for you : ie: dial in every fifteen minutes and if Stock X or Index Y has hit a certain point, buy or sell x, y and z. I have not used this, but can see its merits.
