The Swiss fiasco of 1997 killed the stock which had been going well, and the stock never really recovered. The possibility of the shorting should have been recognized by the company and avoided the deal. The company did curtail the extent of it as soon as they caught on what was going on, but by that time the damage was done. The 700,000 shorts have been a major concern to potential investors ever since.
