John... I believe the point of the article, was identified in it's title, Inktomi's Dr. Eric Brewer Sees the Future. Co-founder and Inktomi's chief scientist, Brewer's (MIT PHD in parallel computng, and assistant prof at Berkeley) job is to "see what's coming multiple years out" and get products there. excerpts.....the company has leveraged its core search technologies to develop new products and services, including most prominently its data-networking technology that helps reduce bandwidth congestion. Inktomi's search technology is now deployed by 25 portals and ISPs, including Yahoo, CNET and Nippon Telegraph and Telephone. On March 25, Inktomi announced eight new search customers, including BellSouth, Chello Broadband N.V. and StarMedia Network .............. Right now, Inktomi's most important technology is its traffic server, which is designed to ease the bandwidth bottleneck by storing or "caching" copies of frequently accessed information nearby the user. Although the market for network caching is nascent and extremely competitive, Inktomi in 1998 managed to earn nearly $8 million, or 39 percent of its revenue, from the traffic server – up from 1 percent in 1997. More startling is the fact that in its most recent fiscal quarter, the traffic server accounted for 51 percent of Inktomi's $10.7 million in revenue. That percentage will likely receive another boost, as Inktomi recently launched a professional services program to help Internet service and hosting providers deploy the server. Traffic-server customers include Cable & Wireless Communications, AtHome, Exodus Communications and Telefonica in Spain, among others. Beyond further developing its traffic server and commerce engine, Brewer says Inktomi's next plans are to improve its search technology. "I won't get into any specifics yet, but I will say that relevance is the single biggest area of investment in search right now," says Brewer. "In the last year, we have gotten all the scale and availability and presence issues under control, and we've turned the guns on relevance. It's already having a big impact internally, and it's going to make a difference Based on the article, Inktomi (with the assistance of Brewer), is one of the companies leading the future, and investment managers are realizing it's value IMHO.
