Wouldn't you add the inflexibility of the regime? Chuzzlewit, I meant to imply that in the first point: "the ineptitude and the anachronistic character of the Russian monarchy." By the monarchy, I meant not just the monarchs, but their bureaucratic servants as well. I still like the term "anachronistic character" better than "inflexibility". We are talking about a country, after all, where only a few years earlier the Minister of Justice himself had cooked up the infamous Beilis case. What could be more anachronistic than to charge a Jew (in all seriousness!!) with having committed "ritual murder"??!! Joan
