Frank -
I doubt that Mason has much latitude in his job
From what I have heard, that was not at all true of Mason. He made a number of changes early on which brought the financial empire more directly under his control, and when the street responded positively, Mason used the opportunity to consolidate his power. In 1997 he was widely regarded as nearly as powerful as EP.

Intimidated? Not from what I hear, it was EP who was intimidated. The 1997 4Q channel stuffing was done by Roel Pieper but most people thought that EP must have approved it. They say Pieper was sacked to give EP a scapegoat. Some thought that Mason would use that opportunity to build support with the board to oust EP as CEO - "get at the real problem".

Whatever the real facts, opinion is nearly universal that EM operated with greater independence than any of the other senior managers and saw himself as nearly EP's equal in the grand scheme.
