San Diego was one of the first cities to have Sprint PCS service. I organized a deal for the employees of our company that enhanced the existing "pioneer plan" and subsequently enrolled a few hundred phones. Initially there were many complaints of bad service and dropped calls. The coverage was very thin and the response I got from the company was "there are new cell sites going up soon". It has taken a long time, but the coverage now appears to be adequate. I am aware of only one major hole in the more populated areas of the county. This hole is in the DelMar/Rancho Santa Fe area where supposedly the NIMBY forces have thwarted Sprint's attempt to put up an antenna. The number of complaints I have received has dwindled to almost zero.(Whether the unhappy customers gave up the service or are now satisfied, I do not know.)

In any event, I agree that their haste to market left a lot to be desired, but the system now is much improved and does an adequate job.

Hey Art: I am a subscriber to PCS, live in a northern suburb but work in Manhattan. The coverage in Manhattan and points half-way north to where we live is good. North and east, very spotty coverage, with part of the difficulty of increasing coverage of the supposed footprint being local resistance to towers. We purchased Q's dual mode handsets, which work well. Obviously, the analog roaming is more expensive. And it is true that in the Sprint PCS stores that employees, even those on the ball, are unable to advise exactly that status of the buildout to non-covered areas. With the exception of the spotty coverage in my residential area, I'm happy with the service, and the pricing during promotions can't be beat. Puts BAM to shame. Voicemail is reliable, but a bit slow in arriving. Regards. Liacos_samui
