elmatador,

I agree with you comments. DSL and Cable are both good things and will bring the much needed bandwidth to users everywhere.

Still, this doesn't address my earlier comment on IP for multiservice versus switched. Fact is, IP allows the carriers to support far more users over a given amount of bandwidth and thus derive higher revenues than their competitors. This is a key factor in why carriers find IP so intriguing.....and although multiservice over IP is not all the way baked, you can be the carriers are very much interested.

You might ask why I only talk about IP...what about ATM. ATM also has a significant play but that play is in the backbone. Here we sit in our homes accessing the internet over IP, getting authenticated by our companies via Radius, getting IP from DHCP servers... the infrastructure is in place; now we simply layer on top voice and video and badabing - multiservice. Today ATM is important over the backbone to assure timely delivery....it is clearly the best mechanism to do that. But IMO the edge is and will be ruled by multiservice over IP. IP companies like CISCO would like to migrate to an IP over WDM model, whereas some ATM companies pushed for ATM to the desktop - ala FORE. Most smart ATM companies have given this calling up...like ASND who has focused exclusively on the backbone. This is one of the reasons why ASND has been so successful...they know where ATM fits and they have gone after it with 100% of their effort. The results speak for themselves.

Going forward there is no doubt that infrastructure build out has a long way to go. It's my belief that you really can't go wrong with LU, ASND, LU, and perhaps a few speculatives like TLAB, ERICY, ALA, and maybe NT. Add of dash of takeover targets like FORE, AFCI, PAIR and you'll have great returns.
