Nothing wrong with your philosophy. On the other hand, lots of people in the world who don't expect good things to happen to them, maybe even on some level don't want good things to be done to them, and they are not going to feel the same way. I always try to notice other drivers, for example, and let them out or in or whatever it takes to keep traffic moving smoothly, e.g., if I am waiting for a red light, and someone wants to come out of a driveway I stop so I don't block the driveway. Believe it or not, that's fairly common in Northern Virginia, but when I go to Baton Rouge, it's unheard-of. My sister, who is a very nice woman, is not a courteous driver in that sense, although she never cuts anyone off or anything like that. Different perceptions, I think, fueled by the expectations of one's milieu.

I remember a very wealthy man complaining about his servants, that you couldn't expect them to clean the baseboards without being told if they didn't clean the baseboards in their own homes. I thought that was a very wise observation, one which I try to remember when asking people to do things, or even expecting them to do things.
