The link below will take you to the C.E. Unterberg Towbin satellite research page. I was very surprised to see they were still projecting a 12/99 price target of $36 for I*, but only $26 for G*. unterberg.com

<<7. G* as Y2K play. 3rd World telecoms/govts/corporations/elites will buy lots of MSS handsets (G* 10X lower cost than I*) for Y2K insurance. My theory is that they will come to depend on MSS due to higher reliability than existing landline and cell coverage/gaps.>>

Djane: I've always considered this a key opportunity for G* and darn well hope they can get the system implemented to capitalize on it. Organizations are getting into full swing on Y2K contingency/business continuity planning. An excellent PR opp, too. ...Tim

Nice summary, thanks.

Djane, thanks once again for the informative posts; regarding a couple of points on your analysis, you wrote:

<3. Rural fixed telephony. No competition from fiber. 3/31/99 ING report said
service providers estimate 25% fixed phone booth ratio.>

I think the big competitor here for G* will not be fiber, but geo sats ; if the ground terminal is fixed, geos will be much cheaper for this kind of service and, almost by definition most rural telephony users won't care much about latency.

<7. G* as Y2K play. 3rd World telecoms/govts/corporations/elites will buy lots of
MSS handsets (G* 10X lower cost than I*) for Y2K insurance. My theory is that

I' don't think G* will benefit much from Y2K: it only expects to have 135K user terminals buit, and I suspect that's a best case scenario.
