In my opinion Y2K is over hyped

I fully agree.

But I am assuming this is in the context of how Y2K is publically discussed in the media... where the arguments are "fairly" presented as two opposing camps... either the end of the world or it's consultants hype.

I take the middle ground that (1) life on earth will continue, (2)yes, there is a tremendous amount of hype/tripe floating around, and (3) most importantly software projects are late, big software projects are later.

From which of these context are you approaching?

What is your direct, personal experience with software projects?

Have you ever seen any kind of large, complex software effort be delivered on time? Certainly MightySoft can't do it now. IBM never did it when they were cock-of-the-roost.

Before I can make an attempt to reply to the "doomer" question, what is your meaning of it? My perception is that folks like "Scary" Gary North, Paul Milne, & Jerry Falwell are leaders (in my view) of the doomer camp.

While my financial instincts are certainly envious of North's ability to have such an uninterrupted track record of selling the end of the world, I think he's a great editor & essentially doesn't have a clue what he's talking about. He's a great promotor & knows how to sell to his audience. It's unfortunate that this software cancer offers him such an inviting target.

In a breif one or two liner, post your predictions for Y2K.

Read Kindleberger's "Manias, Panics & Crashes"

I do predict that the world will NOT end on 1/1/00.

I do predict that Al "Woody" Gore will NOT run for president because of the damage caused by the effects of Y2K snafus. The fact that he has passively sat back & said zippo on the situation will be held against him.
