"I believe that it is just a matter of time until Intel and Compaq square off in the CPU/PC battles. They have been heading in that direction for some time now"

Yes but then why would CPQ go so heavily into the service end of PC's, they can't possible take on IBM & Intel. I am sure glad I got rid of my CPQ stock around a year ago. I think CPQ should have played ball rather than buck the system, I bet a lot of people are happy to see them having rough times. Mean time Dell is making deals with IBM, Dell is solid with Intel. I think a lot can be learned by others from watching CPQ. Hope GTW is watching.

I wonder what the impact would be if Intel took one of their fabs that was on hold and tried making boxes. As fast as Dell has grown, that could have been all Intel.

Pentium III won't make its way down to the low end according to this report. Looks like a great strategy to keep the expensive chips from getting "mixed" in with the cheap Celerons. Product differentiation to remain especially if the PII is eliminated. IMHO, it would be a great move if true!

>I see Celeron as a black hole which sucks the life out of AMD.<

Glad to see you agree with my post yesterday re the Celeron. This much-maligned little chip proved to be the last nail in AMD's coffin

I understand that Intel has made a lot of boxes -- servers, netpc's, everything. They perhaps believe that competing directly with their customers in the whitebox business makes little sense for a company that emphasizes gross margins in their incentive pay structure. Who would you find around the place willing to accept what can be made from selling boxes.
