Thanks for your views on the topic, although some, including myself, would differ over the semantic meaning of digital versus analog in this case.

Your more far-reaching perceptions are right on, in the global context, but DWDM is patently an analog technology. It has to do with wavelength (frequency) division multiplexing at the Layer One of the OSI reference model. It isn't until external information is embedded onto the physical layer, higher up in the stack, that we begin to create a texture that is digital. It's like an age-old conundrum, this discussion.
