Re: CPQ and Channel Stuffing

It looks like CPQ and IBM stuffed the PC Server Market segment heavily during Q4:

1 Compaq 242,778 34.0% 198,250 35.7% 22%
2 IBM 109,454 15.3% 81,658 14.7% 34%

This would kill them in Q1 in this market segment.

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Eckhard Pfeiffer is blaming overall weakness in the PC business for his company's impending dramatic shortfall in profits.
Pfeiffer, the chief executive of Compaq Computer Corp., said Sunday that his personal conversations with unidentified leaders in the chip and disk drive business indicate that Compaq's problems are not unique.
He said he expects industry growth for the first quarter to be 8 or 9 percent when the final numbers are tallied, not 12 to 13 percent that was expected

and this from wsj.com

Analyst Don Young of PaineWebber Inc. estimates resellers hold four weeks of sales on their shelves, compared with 12 weeks a year ago. However, the timing and size of Compaq's profit miss suggests the company was required to make significant price concessions on those inventories, Mr. Young said.

He believes the impact of selling even a small amount of discounted PCs could ripple across the industry. He said if demand doesn't accelerate by midyear, price competition will worsen as companies try to hold on to their market share.

Larry, The analyst is out to lunch. Most of Compaq's problems, according to them, were not at the high end. I don't know if I can believe them, but why say it otherwise?

3Com is a piece of crap and not really my cup of tea. Oracle is a co. I have owned many times and it is a nice brew of Constant Comment. <g> IMHO, it starts looking like a decent value close to $15.

>>"Maybe their product mixture changed in a way that was different from what they expected,"<<

you mean this analyst is spouting bs he doesn't KNOW? ;-)

>>"This should be Compaq-specific."<<

way to use powerful words, bug guy! ;-)
