. I don't expect the user (my mother) to need an upgrade for quite some time.

Yeah ... just wait until she wants to play Team Fortress II.

Katherine,

As long as your mother doesn't want to Surf Websites with complex graphics, animation, sound, RealPlayer stuff, complex JAVA, etc.,
the machine will be perfectly good for her for a long time to come.

My point is that many of the people getting these freebies or near freebies will be enticed to upgrade to do some of the things that they have discovered that their friends can do with no sweat.

And I suspect that Dell will be very attractive to a large number of those deciding to upgrade.

I think the freebie providers are likely to end up with a less than stellar customer service reputation. I've not run into any Dell customers with major complaints, though I'm sure there must be lots of them out there - just a very minuscule %age of their total customer base.

FWIW,
Ian.

Re CSCO: In my mind, its the class stock in the Internet infrastructure arena. It's got a multiple that makes a Dell owner choke; its about to face some real competition from Lu (once / if it gets its ASND act together) as well as NT (once it gets its BAY act together.) The dark horse is NN which has a very strong ATM product line and is well into the process of adding the IP line cards, etc.

But CSCO hasn't missed a beat yet; and I sure wouldn't bet on it happening soon. It's just priced too richly for my blood.

I do hope it turns out to be as successful while you're holding it as it has been during the past decade.
