WASHINGTON (AP) - The number of Americans claiming unemployment
benefits rose last week but remained at less than
300,000 for the 10th consecutive week, the longest such
stretch in 25 years. A seasonally adjusted 299,000
Americans filed applications for unemployment checks, up
11,000 from the week before the Labor Department said
Wednesday. A four-week moving average of jobless claims
rose by 1,750 to 295,250. The 10 weeks of initial claims
of less than 300,000 marked the longest such stretch
since 1973, reflecting the fact that the nation's
unemployment rate, at 4.2% in March, was at a 29-year
low.
