The oversized L1 cache is not the panacea that you make it out to be.

Let's apply some context to this. I was responding to Paul's message:

The reason they now see a future for their PA-RISC machines is that Intel is now building their PA-RISC 8500 with on-chip 1.5 Megabytes of L1 cache - and they are ecstatic !

L1 cache is at least twice as fast as onboard L2, and that makes a huge performance difference.
