I think you unnecessarilly over complicated your life.

Yeah...but I'm consistant about that <gg>

they must be INSTALLED on ALL THREE SETUPS

AT least I don't have to chose a designated drive this way..

1. Install each of the three copies in three diferent directories.....Backup creates a catalog that tracks which files are on which tapes so you don't have to index the tapes at restore time.

I am backing up to two rotating 17 gig Maxtors Would this catalog simply replace which tapes with which drive? And continue to have the same fragmentation across the three install dir?

2. Install the program three times in the same directory and drive overwriting the existing files each time.

I've never heard of this trick, so please excuse some simplistic questions. If I install 3 times in the same place, how do installation files get to the other two drives?

you can share configuration information across the installs.

Again simplistic question..I see this ending up with one install. How does configuration information get spread across the installs? I am missing something central to this procedure.

I would not recommend storing any data on any drives that may be hidden.

The only hidden partition I have is a backup copy of KOT. Its dormant without any changing data.

if you setup network shares for all of them you can use UNC's to reference the data from the backup
I'm sure I can find out about UNC's from Help but can you point me in the right direction to setup network shares? Is this the same as a LAN except in the same box?

These two apps getting to work across my drives has turned into a real challenge. But I still believe in the relative security afforded by isolating drives, so I guess the extra brain drain is worth it here.

Thanks for your excellent post, Sean. I appreciate your effort. Sorry about the slow uptake:-(

Therefore they must be INSTALLED on ALL THREE SETUPS to guarantee they will run every night despite which configuration your booted into at that point in time.

I am a little confused. Why is a second drive different than an extended partition or a second drive that does not have a boot capability? Isn't it just another drive letter to the backup software? Can't you just tell the program to back up files on the C, D, E and F drives?

2. Install the program three times in the same directory and drive overwriting the existing files each time. This works well with lots of software and then you can share configuration information across the installs. Only have 1 program dir and still get all the common components and registry entries in the correct place.

I did above with Backup Exec and no problems have surfaced initially. I have the ability to run BE manually from everywhere with only the one program folder. I wanted to test and get a little familiar before I turned on the scheduler which will be the real test. Haven't experimented with Diskeeper yet...I confuse easily..as you know <g>

Thanks for the neat trick...
