Eugene,

Did you see the article about the college professor in Iowa who started an on-line book selling business ? I read it first in December when he was selling 20 books a month. Now I think he/wife/daughter are handling $4000/day with significant profit.

I just don't understand how amzn can be losing money if their business plan had any merit. I also don't understand how losing money now can help them make money later. I don't say they can't make profit later. The question is why is it necessary to lose now in order to profit later ? By the way, it was not in their plans to be losing now. All the analyst projections were for profits this year.

Regarding Yahoo, in my opinion, the share dilution in acquiring GeoCities and BCST indicates total contempt for shareholders. Is there any possible way for these startups to be worth $5 billion plus ?

The cost of setting up the business was less than $100 M for each one. And their brands are irrelevant because they will be absorbed into Yahoo's brand.

So why does yhoo trade away 33 million shares for a business like that? My only answer is they think this is preferable to spending $100 million of cash. Is the $100 million a bad estimate ? I took it from the financial figures for BCST in Zacks.

With GeoCities. Is that anything other than renting some disk space and an address on a name server ? Why will that be wildly profitable since it is provided by every ISP ? Of course so far for Yahoo it is not profitable.
