The Host With The Most Apps
Inter@ctive Week March 29, 1999

Gordon Brooks says he's feeling nimble again. The co-founder of consulting powerhouse Cambridge Technology Partners has emerged from a short retirement to head Breakaway Solutions (www.breakaway.com). The application service provider (ASP) aims to help companies rent applications from a hosting service over the internet and to become the most prominent ASP along the way. Brooks spoke with Senior Writer Mel Duval.

Why did you leave Cambridge?

I was very happy with what I had accomplished, but I was looking at what I was doing and got the itch to go out and build something again. I looked at the middle market and saw there was a huge void there. I saw an opportunity to go out and really do something different.

What made you launch an ASP?

It's getting to the point where companies are going to demand these types of services. It costs 30 percent to 40-percent less to rent an application then to go and buy, install, and manage it yourself. Then there's the people issue: companies can't find the human resources they need today.

What types of applications will you offer?

We're going to specialize in providing customer-facing systems to midsized businesses - things like sales force automation, order management, customer resource management and enterprise marketing.

What's it like to start at the bottom again?

It's fun. I'm nimble. There are a lot of benefits to be gained from being small and being able to make a whole new market. I really think this could be one of the last great frontiers.
