My Qwest judgement was based on my belief in WDM requiring a
fundamentally new topology. With the Lucent AllWave breakthrough--
the most important feat in fiber since Erbium amplification--it has
now become possible to put as many as 1000 wavelengths in a single
fiber. The trouble with the emerging Qwest topology is its focus on
huge Sonet pipes which require huge Sonet add/drops (processing all
the packets) just to find one. The future is passive switching of
wavelength lambdas at literally thousands of times less cost. But
my letter does not say to sell Qwest (it is not a timing letter)
and I wish the Qwest people were not so focused in getting bought
out. GBLX's plan is to defeat AT&T, not to be bought out by them.
