Jr, Spoos is just ONE indicator of market. . .bears can push spoos lower for the purpose of causing panic selling, which greatly helps their short positions. This is often referred to a "painting the spoos."

War is not necessarily bad for the market. If the war machine gets cranking again, it could actually give a lift to the U.S. defense industry and could literally SAVE Russia and some Asian countries like China and Japan, should it escalate to world war status. Unfortunately, economy and politics are related in complex ways.

Gold was traditionally where investors ran in such times. But the U.S. dollar has become the new gold, so I don't expect gold to respond like it would have done several decades ago. I don't think we need a strong defensive position due to war, or move into defense contract companies.

Inets are not being affected by Compaq woes. I am not selling ANY Compaq into this weakness. They recently changed their business model to add custom building [like Dell]. . .did we think this long-term restructuring would be free? So CPQ warns. I would rather see that earnings report myself before deciding whether to hold, sell or buy more.
