Avici Systems Incorporates State-of-the-Art LSI Logic ASICs Into Its Revolutionary TSR(TM) Terabit Switch/Router

BILLERICA, Mass., April 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Avici Systems Inc., (www.avici.com) developer of the revolutionary, next-generation Internet backbone platforms, today announced state-of-the-art application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) provided by LSI Logic Corporation, The System on a Chip Company, have been incorporated into Avici's breakthrough TSR(TM) Terabit Switch/Router. These chips enable unprecedented scalability for building future "speed-of-light" networks.

Avici and LSI Logic collaborated in developing nine custom ASICs dedicated to performing tasks such as packet forwarding, congestion control, queue management and quality of service at full OC-48 and OC-192 line rates. Using micro-programmable ASICs to optimize throughput, resiliency and scalability, Avici's TSR will help carriers gradually and cost-effectively build next- generation public networks without forklift upgrades.

"Leveraging LSI Logic's tradition of high-performance ASIC technology, our TSR delivers today the platform on which carriers can flexibly and efficiently migrate toward the IP-optical future of public internetworks," said Surya Panditi, Avici president and CEO. "This collaboration maximizes scalability, so carriers can add throughput as they grow capacity, while minimizing power consumption, real estate and total cost of build-out."

The Avici TSR uses LSI Logic's technology to provide:

-- the highest port density of any terabit router/switch on the market;

-- the lowest power consumption per OC-48 port (65 watts);

-- the first truly scalable switching fabric, unique architecture that adds 60 Gbps capacity with each added module;

-- a switching chipset that lets the fabric grow incrementally while the machine remains operational;

-- a micro-programmable forwarding engine that can shuttle 40-byte packets at wire rate at a fraction of the cost of CAM (content addressable memory) technology; and

-- full QoS handling of all packets, with micro-programmable ASICs able to be configured with QoS behaviors based on customer requirements.

"Our partnership with Avici Systems demonstrates our system-on-a-chip technology as we move forward into the next-generation of the Internet," said Giuseppe Staffaroni, VP and General Manager, Communications Products at LSI Logic. "LSI Logic's highly integrated solutions, proven engineering expertise and value-added support services enable carriers to meet the challenge of creating a network platform that scales well and can accommodate tremendous growth."

Avici's TSR, scheduled to ship in quantity in Q2'99, will enable creation of the first optical "speed-of-light" Internet backbone with packet over wavelength (POW) optical integration. Its resiliency, speed and scalability will enable carriers to deploy the vast number of "always-on" Internet connections that business and residential customers are expected to demand.
