Steven, there is no doubt in my mind that the internet-based commerce will grow at an astounding clip. What I do doubt is the long-term viability of some of the players. Perhaps what we will ultimately see is the reconstitution of some of the intermediate distribution channels into a combination of distributors for existing brick and mortar stores and e-tailing.

One thing, I think, is certain: the value of branding in this environment is grossly overstated. That means that the e-tailers will have to spend huge amounts of money on advertising. And that implies very healthy revenue growth for companies like AOL, along with the portals. Whether their current market price is justified by the potential growth is another story altogether.
