CPQ claims that inventory levels were stable at about 4 weeks. This leads to speculation that they had to increase incentives to clear out old inventory from the channel and that may have had a greater adverse effect than previously expected. Sounds reasonable, but hardly reassuring.

Notwithstanding CPQ's pronouncements on the upcoming quarter, no reason currently to believe that their problem is bedeviling DELL. Further information required, IMO, as from INTC and others.

ML notes that industry revenue growth prospects are now down to 5%-7% for the year with unit growth at 13%-15%. For those of you who positively hate the mention of emachines, I'll quote from the ML piece:

"With the continued success of low cost vendors such as eMachines driving the consumer market, we do not expect to become more optimistic about the PC industry in the foreseeable future."
