Yeah sometimes that happens (just a few days ago when they forced it to open at $22 for example), but todays was simply because in addition to the market orders, some people had a huge amount at set prices. eg. bid at $23.50 for 50k shares or whatever. As the block moved up and down around that, the bids would increase/decrease by 50k at a time ;)
