Artecon and Inktomi Sign OEM Agreement; New Alliance Enables Artecon and Inktomi to Target Telecommunications and Mid-tier ISP Market
SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 12, 1999--Artecon (Nasdaq:ARTE), a leader in network storage solutions, and Inktomi Corp. (Nasdaq:INKT), a leading provider of scalable Internet infrastructure software, today announced an OEM agreement to build the first vertically focused caching solution for Inktomi's Traffic Server(TM) platform.
Artecon will utilize Inktomi's network caching technology to create fully integrated carrier-class caching systems that enable accelerated content delivery over the Internet.
"Becoming a supplier of Internet infrastructure is a natural direction for Artecon, building on their experience and reputation as a telecommunications equipment supplier," said Peter Christy, principal at Collaborative Research (Los Altos, Calif.), the leading market research and information services firm focused on emerging Internet, e-business and e-commerce infrastructure. "Caching systems provide the intelligent storage that is essential to deliver the cost-effective, high quality of service experience that fuels the growth of the Internet. Telecommunications is an important part of the caching market, and Inktomi is certainly an ideal partner with whom to enter the market."
Caching plays a key role in maintaining and improving network performance by speeding data access. The combination of Traffic Server with Artecon's high-availability storage systems and Telco/ISP systems integration experience will enable the development of plug-and-play, fault-resilient systems.
"We are pleased to be collaborating with Inktomi," said Miles Moore, Artecon's vice president of marketing. "This alliance represents the perfect marriage of carrier-class network caching technology and carrier-class storage systems. With our strategy to provide fully integrated product solutions, Inktomi and Artecon together will bring Traffic Server to a broader segment of the service provider market. Today's announcement is recognition of Artecon's commitment to our Internet storage initiative, and we will continue to aggressively pursue the development of new solutions that satisfy the performance requirements of the network infrastructure market."
"Artecon's network storage and telecommunications expertise coupled with the Traffic Server platform provides a turnkey solution for the telecommunications marketplace," said Vince Vannelli, vice president of worldwide field operations at Inktomi. "Inktomi's carrier-class network cache enables telcos and ISPs to scale their operations to meet rapidly growing demand and performance requirements."
