PBS has a long piece entitled "The American Experience", part of which aired here yesterday. Chronicles the war in Vietnam from the 40's onward.

What struck me the most about the segment I watched was a clip where a South Vietnamese peasant said "All the Americans do here is burn everything down." There were clips of soldiers burning down villages.

Can't blame the soldiers for trying to stay alive, but the whole thing put me in mind of what's happening with NATO/Yugoslavia today.

The Serbs won't know what hit them. There will be ground troops, but only to restablish the refugees. The troops will not be wearing 3rd Army uniforms, probably Nato or even UN supported by A10's and Blackhawks. All Serb armour will be ANNIHILATED! The Serb Army will be a shadow of its former self. The KLA will get better guns and air support. The Russians will be held at bay through extraordinarily effective propaganda about "newly discovered massacre sites". It will be over quickly but the fighting will go on and on and on, albeit at much lower intensity, and will make the news once a month.

BTW The Russians have no "friends", not after what those bastards did after WW II. JMVVO. I hate the whole freaking thing because I have fond memories of a summer spent in the wonderful town of Split on the Croatian coast. Great, and friendly folk there. I was in the company of my "first love", we ate fresh figs all day, swam naked as jaybirds in the Adriatic, and drank Slivovitz all night. THOSE WERE THE DAYS. Damn it Douglas! Now ya done it! The big bad ole Bull is bawlin' all over his keyboard! Shame on you! <vbg>
