Network advertising will insure the success of boxes such as TiVo and Replay. Just say NO to ads........

Study: Ads Soaring on Prime-Time

NEW YORK (AP) -- If you find that you're channel-surfing more often than ever, it's no surprise. A new study shows that an average hour of prime-time TV contained 15 minutes, 44 seconds of advertising last November, a jump of 25 seconds over the year before. It was the most ad time ever recorded since two trade groups began measuring in 1989. Both ABC and NBC pack in nearly five minutes more of ads and promotions into a prime-time hour than they did a decade ago, the report by Mediacom said. Programming costs have been going up at the same time, forcing network executives to look harder for more revenue.

MILPITAS, Calif.—C-Cube Microsystems is co-developing advanced digital video MPEG encoding software with Microsoft Corp.

Microsoft Windows hardware developers will be able to use the software in conjunction with C-Cube's DVxplore MPEG-2 encoder to design MPEG-2 encoding products that deliver digital video editing, digital VCR and timeshifting capabilities to the consumer PC market.

According to C-Cube, DVxplore will allow PC OEMs to offer digital recording of television programs to DVD disc, CD-R or PC hard disk drive, in addition to offering simultaneous record and playback, allowing consumers to pause, rewind and fast-forward live television broadcasts. DVxplore, says C-Cube, allows developers to incorporate a "record" button into electronic programming guide applications, allowing consumers to easily select and digitally store television shows for future viewing. Additionally, C-Cube says DVxplore enables MPEG-2 video editing applications on the PC. After capturing analog video, or digital video from a DV camcorder, DVxplore compresses the video into MPEG-2 and allows for frame accurate splicing and editing. The final cut is then ready for storage, playback or distribution.
