Lance, that is up to the company. A lot of spin-offs only bring earnings of spin-off into the parent books. The parent company holds X number of shares of the new company. My stock dropped after the spin-offs. Especially if the spin-off is the big money maker of the parent company. It's actually further dilution as more shares are printed for the new company.
