voice is an extremely delay sensitive technology.. that is the beauty of atm. there is very little delay variation between cells. voip (over ethernet or frame relay) must compete with data. not a good thing.. the present day voice switches will not tolerate this. therefore the cisco's, nortel's, lucent's, and other manufactures of the world will work to create some sort of of standard that will prioritize voice at the access level. rsvp and the use of the ip prioity bits are just bandaids and will not scale. if it were up to atm at the access level...it could provide you with qos (quality of service) right off the bat. the only problem is price point and atm aware applications.. look out baby they are on the way sooner than you think.
