Sounds like you did a great job managing your portfolio. Congratulations! I know it takes skill, luck and talent; some of which I am still trying to acquire.

Good luck and best regards,

Kevin

<<I think for the first time ever a broker's tip paid off. A few
weeks ago I was going to buy CPQ. He warned against it as he had seen a report on the
sector suggesting softness. >>
Just being dumb may have paid off for your broker. Given that Compaq's revenue shortfall was only about 4 percent and units were probably roughly in line with expectations, this miss was not easy to forecast for someone doing their homework. The primary problems turned out to be US PC business pricing pressures from IBM leading to reduce margins and losses related to the Brazilian Real. So those doing their homework, may be excused for not having foreseen the weak earnings this quarter. (Montgomery securities actually believes Compaq will still exceed 15 cents per share this quarter even while overstating the bad news.)
On the other hand, a broker merely parrotting the usual first quarter PC market weakness concerns would likely have been negative on CPQ. The obvious question is whether the weakness which has just recently shown itself in the disk drive industry, is merely a correction of over optimistic projections for the first quarter or whether it foreshadows a more significant weakness just now beginning. I guess we'll have a much better idea after the Intel and Seagate conference calls.
