Uh, I hate to point this out, but Godin was right on with his F'98 estimates. Why would F'99 be any different? Besides, all he said was that he felt comfortable with analysts' estimates of $50 million.

Conversely, what has he done to deserve a lack of trust? A public company is expected to guide analysts and the market to reasonable expectations. When they don't...well, witness Compaq. It is in their best interest to do this right.

Does that mean I'm guaranteeing PG's numbers? No more than I'd have guaranteed Compaq's, or upcoming Intel's or whoever's. It is the *company* that is expected to ensure expectations aren't out of hand. In which case, unless you can point me to instances where PG has materially misled the market in the past, I'm comfortable.

Wiselight, figure it out yourself. GODIN says $50M for '99 after coming off a flat 4th quarter. I wonder what he is basing his forecast on. I guess it must be the + $10M to $15M for the MJ card and the balance from posters and hats.

>>No, absolutely not! Why should he be more credible at this point?
What's his track record? What has he done before that makes his call more reliable than an analyst?

Wiselight,

You just don't get it. Do you really think that these analysts are making theirown predictions? Get real. Each analyst, at least the good ones, talks with the company, gets presentations from the company, gets "inside" information which we are not privileged to, and obtains the companies expectations. Then, and only then, does an analyst, at least the good ones, make any public comments on their expectations.

Come on wiselight, it's easy to see. Godin is feeding them a number in which Godin is comfortable with. To do otherwise is suicide, both for Godin as well as for the analysts. They work together, that's what makes the markets work.

Just as a case in point, look at Compaq. The analysts were VERY upset the compaq did not inform them earlier. Why, because it makes the analysts look bad, period.
