Bookmarks in Win98

I was in the same boat a month ago. New to Win98, never really comfortable with Win31, and quite happy with DOS. Here's my opinion.

Win98 uses 'Favourites' and 'Shortcuts' in a 'funny' way. You have a folder called favourites which contains shortcuts. This is just a collection of files, each one containing a pointer to some web page. Your challenge is to get your SINGLE file of stuff into this new format. I don't know if there is a PROPER way, but if nobody points one out to you try this:

I HAVE NOT TRIED THIS! IT MAY NOT WORK!

A) Open INTERNET EXPLORER
B) Click File | Open | Browse, and find your old bookmark file
(Your bookmarks should display, since they are HTML (I think!))
C) Right click on each bookmark and select 'Add to Favourites'

When you're done, you should have your old favourites available in Win98.

If anyone knows a better way, please let us know. I'm sure we're not the only ones facing this challenge.

Hope this helps, PW.

P.S. This would be a great time to do some housecleaning of old links we never visit any more.

>>where is the equivalent of the old win 3.1 "program manager" in win 98<<

Challo (interesting name), I never had the pleasure of 3.1, but I believe the equivalent is to hit "Start" and then choose "Programs" from the drop-down menu.

I'm not sure how to transfer your old bookmarks to the new browser. If you're using internet explorer, the bookmarks, called "favorites" are in C:\Windows\Favorites. You might try just copying the old favorites into the new folder.

Since you call them "bookmarks" I suspect you use Netscape in which case someone else will have to help you.

I believe if you have Netscape installed in Win98 and then you install ie4 or 5, ie will import all your bookmarks from Netscape automatically.

I may be wrong about everything,
wily

PS It is a great help to learn the features of the "Find" function: Start/Find. If you're looking for a file somewhere in the computer this will search for it. Also has a text search. You can also find all files with a particular extension by searching for "*.xyz" (without the quotes).

Your email and address book folders are in Windows/Application Data.

Your program shortcuts that show up in Start/Programs are in Windows\Start Menu

You might want to check your folder: Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup to see what junk they have set to start up every time you turn your computer on. Some people have low resources because of this, although I think it's still possible for some programs to auto-run without being in that folder.

ctrl+alt+del is another way of viewing which programs are in use and is an emergency way of shutting them down. Hit it twice in a row and Windows shuts down (not recommended).

Hi Challo

I'm not sure if the Win98 browser is the same as IE5...anyway IE5 has an import/export feature for Favorites, you can find it under "File" on the menu. It worked really nice for me, I exported all my favorites to a folder on my desktop and then e-mailed the file to work where I imported them all without a hitch.....really nice feature.
