It's not over yet!!<

Are you saying Abraham is now a Christian or that you are a Jew?

So it meant nothing to Abraham who wasn't a Christian. And it scared the crap out of poor Isaac because he discovered his father was an escapee from a local asylum. And it sure didn't help the 6 million Jews exterminated in the camps.

Do you honestly believe that if you saw that scene reenacted today -- a father attempting to kill his son -- that you would walk away accepting the glib statement from this deranged individual that God told him to do it, and that made this act of barbarity OK?

Or maybe you believe that this is an allegory, and didn't really happen. Maybe this is a way of saying that we are the chosen people. And if so, maybe this is a way of saying we can do whatever we want to anybody else could God told us we could.

There is an interesting (at least to me) article in the April '99 Bible Review on the parallels between Isaac and Ishmael.

I've always thought those two stories (Isaac and Ishmael) belonged together. My own take on it was that Abraham likely resented Sarah driving away Hagar and his first son Ishmael and was, therefore, all too willing to slay Isaac as a result of that resentment. I always found it odd that Abraham, who is depicted as begging and manipulating Godto be merciful with Sodom and Gomorrah, was apparently silent when told to sacrifice Isaac.

But I'd never noticed the many parallels in the language used in the stories of Isaac and Ishmael. Clearly the two stories are paired and are meant to be read together.

Also worth noting is that God promises Hagar and Ishmael to make a great nation from Ishmael's descendents. What do you make of the story of Hagar and Ishmael and the clear parallels and similar divine promises made about each child of Abraham?
