*Page impressions. How many times is a Web page seen? NetRatings is one of the firms that tracks page views.

*Reach. How many unique users come to your site. Media Metrix is one company that tracks this factor.

*Time online. How much time you spend at a site. The portals are obsessed with this number. They think it proves loyalty. NetRatings also tracks this activity.

*Shelf space. Where new users can sign up. Can they find it on AOL? As a premium partner on Yahoo? What partnerships has the site put in place to guarantee it will be in front of users? Wall Street analysts track this number.

*Lifetime value. How much does the site earn from a visitor over the life of the relationship? Smart investors often try to guesstimate this figure.


Most Internet companies trumpet one or the other. We have more eyeballs! We have more partnerships! But the real equation is (# of customers) times (lifetime value). Ultimately it doesn't matter if you get lots of customers unless you can also make money from them. This is a problem Amazon.com has to solve if it wants to stay in favor. Right now, it loses on every customer. The more customers, the more it loses. Likewise, it doesn't matter if you make money from every visitor unless you also have lots of visitors. ..."
