Thank you for the help and the links which I will keep for further reference. I solved the problem by uninstalling that which I installed. It was the newer version of Real Audio which I suspect was written fine and the computer tried some other process while it was installing.

There are a lot of people that like windows and I may not have had this problem if I upgraded to Windows 98 which the disk for that is right here. It just seems that Windows in general is made up of a lot of drives and "patch" components and finding the problem is difficult for many. My lack of experience correcting Windows problems accounts a lot for my problems;-)
