Yahoo! Makes Hong Kong Deal

HONG KONG (AP) - Yahoo! Inc. is teaming up with SmarTone Mobile Communications Ltd. to provide content for the Hong Kong mobile phone operator's new Internet access site, the companies announced Tuesday.

Yahoo!, the Internet's leading search and directory service, and SmarTone refused to put a value on the deal that will allow SmarTone mobile phone users to access iSmart, the Internet service to be launched next week.

iSmart will give SmarTone a means to compete with services offered by Hong Kong Telecommunications Ltd (NYSE:HKT - news)., the territory's largest telecommunications company.

Shares in SmarTone rose 3.5 percent on Tuesday to close at 25.10 Hong Kong dollars (U.S. $3.21), following a 7.1 percent rise on Monday.

Competition in the mobile phone market is stiff, with some 3 million of Hong Kong's 6.8 million residents owning mobile phones. SmarTone offers its users a variety of services including traffic speed trap updates, stock quotes and trading via mobile phone and news updates.

In the deal with Yahoo!, SmarTone users will eventually be able to access the service through their mobile phones, executives said Tuesday.

But the Yahoo! partnership with SmarTone is not an exclusive deal, said Savio Chow, Asia managing director for Yahoo!. Yahoo!, based in Santa Clara, California, will be looking to cooperate with other companies in Hong Kong and Asia in the future, co-founder Jerry Yang said at a news conference without elaborating.
