My view on fixed rural telephony (and its just personal HO) is that it's a market segment most economically served by Geo's; of course those that do care and can afford it, will use G* or its competitors. But if your talking about "village phone booths" the fastest way to get the cheapest phone service to the most people has got to be w/ geos. Such service is likely to be financed by governments, which won't pay a premium for quality of service.

Regards,

RS

Drew,

I have used GEOs systems. To put it bluntly, their voice quality sucks. The delay was just intolerable, at least to me. They say you can get used to it. May be. But if we are talking about village people who will be using this type of service once every month or two, then I am not sure how long this learning curve will be. Also, at the other end, the PSTN one, the user most likely will not have any idea about this delay until it is explained to him that he needs to wait for a second or so before responding. This is a major inconvenience. I think GEOs are doomed as far as voice telephony is concerned. They have their role in data traffic though. Fax, Internet and so on. But voice, I do not think so. Besides, they are not that cheap either. Because the satellites are so high in the sky, these phones need to have a big and powerful antenna, which adds to the cost.

So I agree with you that latency is an issue. It is the issue. It kills the voice quality, period. If somebody does not believe Drew or me, go ahead and try to use any GEO system for making a call. Let us know what you think.
