Well Christine as a said before this "Mom," individual investor and peeceeweenee put her foot down last fall and declared, "No new professional software, nothing, nada, zip...until they fix this damn thing." (Or words to that affect.) But boys will be boys and they do like their toys and persistent whining will wear down even the most stalwart disciplinarian...so this past weekend we bought Linux. Double booting no problem and we have a partition all ready to go. Take "that" Micros**t!

Re: "Gee guys, it's only a bug" campaign...After reading the press releases out of Bogata yesterday I can only come to the conclusion that Gates has embarked on a dishonest, disinformation campaign. There is no excuse for this blase attitude at T minus eight months and counting given the status of his products. Even though only the most gullible will swallow this bug v. flaw argument in the end anyway, somebody needs to slap this guy upside the head without a cream pie in hand on the behalf of dimwitted people everywhere

And yes, I do feel particularly mean today...After eight years as a tax law specialist I still can't get over the trauma Forms 1040, 4797, 2119, and xxx...not to mention Schedules A, B, D and xxx can inflict on the average human being. I've got ACRS of MACRS and enough forms to keep me warm.

Good Gawd! Rebooting twice a day!?!?! What piece of Micros**t are you running?

Christine,

I have many mixed feelings about Microsoft. I really like some of their products, especially Excel. I started using VisiCalc many years ago(early 1980's), moved on to Quattro Pro and finally Excel. The knowledge that I acquired from VisiCalc carried forward to each new product.

My biggest gripe about Microsoft products is that in order to use the products effective, you really need a fairly large amount of training. While it's true that most people can start using some of Microsoft's products right out of the box, to get the full benefit of the software, you probably need some form of training / hand-holding.

I also feel that a lot of the problems that people experience using Microsoft's product are caused by this lack of training. Most of Microsoft's products are very powerful and can run on computers with a large variety of hardware/software.

Their programs are shipped with factory default settings that will work with most PCs. But, in many cases, you have to tweak these initial settings to get the full benefit of the software. I imagine that the many “crashes” that you are experiencing are due to these initial settings.

There are a couple of good Web pages that can help you track down these errant settings. I am sorry that I do not have those self-help URLs available right now. I will PM you these URLs when I have a chance (probably latter this week).

I don't know why Bill Gates has not grasped the scope of the Y2K problem. Maybe he has too many “yes” people working for him. On the other hand, maybe he is fully aware of the magnitude of the problem and has decided to pacify the public. After all, he has built a castle in Washington. And with the majority of his fortune tied up in Microsoft stock, he probably doesn't want to see a stock market meltdown.

I would like to address the “it's only a bug” topic in a later post.

B.K.
