The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday, April 13, edition that shares of
Global Thermoelectric advanced 46 per cent yesterday, closing at $5.05,
after the firm released promising test results last Thursday for its new
fuel cell prototype. The Globe's Guy Dixon writes that the market got
excited because Global's solid oxide fuel cells produced more than twice as
much power as in previous tests. This could mean smaller fuel cells and
possibly increasing the range of products or applications the cells can be
used for. Global says it initially plans to target a different market than
Ballard Power Systems, another maker of non-polluting fuel cells, by
staying focused on its core business of power generators. Potential
customers are phone companies with transmitters in remote areas and other
companies relying on portable electric generators. Global say its door is
open for possible automotive uses. Unnamed New York analysts say they'll
need more persuading before they view Global's type of fuel cell as
feasible for automotive use.
