Not everyone agrees that the March 25 agreement between Ericsson [ERICY] and Qualcomm [QCOM] was good for the
wireless industry (CT, 3/26). While con-ventional wisdom suggests the deal clears up uncertainty over the fate of third-generation
(3G) wireless, Herschel Shosteck Associates holds a more jaundiced view. A new 120-page study from the consulting firm
raises questions about the level of demand for such high-end wireless applications as full-motion video.

The Shosteck report could dampen the hope for 3G that arose in the wake of the decision by Ericsson and Qualcomm to end their
patent dispute. The simmering legal battle had given network operators an excuse to put off dealing with 3G issues. Now they may
feel pressure to spend money on 3G, which Shosteck suggests may lead to financial disaster. While conceding that 3G may indeed
pay off over the long run, Shosteck said the validity of the business case for the technology hasn't been demonstrated from a
short-term perspective.
