Mo:<IBM/DELL> I am not surprised. Last evening, I was talking with ed and scott about this. Basically Gerstner is marketing focused, and ruthless, and I see them making a big push here. Please note, I am talking only about enterprise accounts---large accounts where they figure they can "buy" the account if they have to.

mo....re dell and ibm...

refer to last night postings between arthur pritchard and myself...

ibm can well afford to "sacrifice" an internal business group for the "better good" and sanctity of "the corporation"....

it's a loss leader mentality, like retail uses...get the customer in the "store"....and bang them for "service"....to maintain the low priced "door opener".....it's a common marketing practice, known as "take the order off the street and will worry about it later"...not taught in schools....it's ruthless, and can cause morale problems if the "sacrificial" group is punished (gerstner.."the pc is dead")...for following lock step with the "corporate" marching orders..it's extremely effective, if properly executed...but the "risk" is if you have a competitor that you underestimate...and supply them with your oem parts and technology....happened to both ge and westinghouse(i've posted this comment numerous times)....westinghouse power business went to asea brown boveri by default and ultimate buy out...their control and protective device business group to eaton corp....by default and ultimate buy out....

i firmly believe that no one should underestimate ibm, dell, at this point...i get a feeling in my knee, that ibm out of pc business all together...dell filling the gap with dell products and ibm enterprise group specifying, reselling, installing and servicing( remember the key to profitable service is to install the most reliable and cost effective product..warranty work loses money...maintenance makes money) dell products....believe their storage division will go same direction with emc...and what is left...a whole lot of profitable business groups...and who is damaged...the work force of the "sacrificial" groups...

analyst look and numbers before and after the fact...they dwell on concepts and future market directions...but all the computer econometric models can not begin to attempt to guess the "human factor"...

business is ruthless....numbers are benign...
