No, the amethysts come with a story. Last year we were invited to Governor Gilmore's inauguration (along with everyone else in Virginia who contributed to his campaign), and I wanted to go because I had never been to one. I got a beautiful dress for the ball, black floor-length silk with a gathered and draped skirt, and dark gold bugle beads embroidered on the bodice - I say dark gold because they aren't bright, nor flashy. I didn't have any jewelry that would go with it, I sometimes wear pearl jewelry, sometimes gold, but nothing was right. I decided I didn't need a necklace, just some really good earrings.

We went shopping when we got to Richmond, I knew exactly what I wanted - big gold disks, I had seen them at the Gem and Jewelry show, but I couldn't find anything right. One lady suggested I try a jewelry store we had missed, in the basement of a row house in the old part of Richmond. The jeweler was a Russian emigre, young, quite thin. He obviously had grand ideas, based on the size and decor of his store, but his stock was quite meager. I noted that, and also the fact that his daughter, an adorable child, was there with him while he worked. He said his wife was a dancer with the Richmond Ballet. He appeared quite anxious, but only to the trained eye.

There was only one pair of earrings which were suitable, and they cost more than some cars I have owned. He told me that it had taken hours to cut the gold, he had to do it by hand. I bought them more as an act of charity than anything else, but they are beautiful, and I feel beautiful every time I wear them.

No one has ever commented on them, except my erstwhile partner, who told me that I wore them too much, and that they looked like something that Xena the Warrior Princess would wear. Hah! You should see what his wife wears! Sequins and rhinestones, she looks like a flat-chested Dolly Parton!
